Children and AIDS

This exhibition is part of a broader exhibition I curated called Inside Aids, an anthology of South African responses to the Aids pandemic. As the pandemic unfolded, I like many others took a back step and watched the ongoing tragedy at a distance. Slowly I became involved as the crisis deepened. My first house visit for a hospice organization took me to a family where the grandmother was looking after 3 orphaned children, 2 had been raped by the uncle leaving them with the virus. Since then I have visited many households. This essay is a story of the children whose lives have been shaped in one way or another by AIDS.
